Routing matters more than the SIM format
An eSIM is only a digital way to load a mobile plan. One China eSIM may route data through an international roaming gateway, while another connection may follow local mainland network rules. The package documentation—not the eSIM label—should explain the difference.
Practical test before buying: can the provider point to a current China-specific page that names the apps you care about and explains whether a VPN is required?

Prepare the apps before departure
- Install and update the apps.
Complete updates while you still have reliable home internet.
- Sign in and confirm recovery methods.
Make sure two-factor authentication does not depend on a number you cannot access abroad.
- Download essential information.
Save hotel addresses, tickets, maps, provider instructions, and emergency contacts offline.
- Use the travel eSIM as the data line.
If you switch to hotel Wi-Fi, the eSIM provider’s routing no longer carries that traffic.
